Viktor E. Frankl's book Man's Search For Meaning is an essential reading for anyone who ever pondered the big question "What am I doing here?"
Below are
some excerpts of his book I found on the web.
On Choosing One's Attitude"Everything can be taken from a man but ...the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." p.104
On Discovering the Meaning of Life"The meaning of our existence is not invented by ourselves, but rather detected." p.157
"What matters, therefore, is not the meaning of life in general, but rather the specific meaning of a person's life at a given moment." p.171
"We can discover this meaning in life in three different ways: (1) by doing a deed; (2) by experiencing a value; and (3) by suffering." p.176
I read that book on the plane back to L.A. to bury one of my brothers. It helped me realize that for most people, the rat race of life ends with feelings of loss and fear of the great beyond. It also made me realize how brave my brother was in life and in death.
If the rat race gets to be too much, do what a good friend of mine told me to do 8 years ago...
...fall out of the race and make your own pathI choose to follow Jesus Christ in this life and in the next...
Namaste (that one's for my new friend Satya - have a safe trip back home next month).
